Summer in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom
Summer has arrived in the Northeast Kingdom! The Lupines are standing tall and the air is filled with the scent of freshly mown grass. There are mountains to climb, trails to bike, and lakes awaiting the swish of your paddle as you follow the call of the loons.
You can head out alone with our
self guided tours or let a
professional guide lead the way to adventure. Whether you head out on foot, two wheels or four, wonderful discoveries and sights await. It may be the breathtaking view from the cliffs of Brousseau Mountain or it may be the Peregrine falcon who calls that mountain home. A day of biking the hills beckons you to the unexpected swimming hole
only the locals know about (until now) or it leads you to a country store where a maple creamie awaits and the shopkeeper’s dog comes out from behind the counter to greet you. A journey to one of our many waterways sends you paddling to the most peaceful place on earth or sailing out to hook ‘the Big One’. You’ll find sandy beaches, ropes to swing from and a clever little mink sliding and gliding across the rocks and through the water at Lake Willoughby, on his way to swipe a perch from an unsuspecting fisherman.
Pick a direction and drive – you’re certain to encounter astounding beauty and treasures – be they hand-made or nature-made. It may the grand sight of a Bull Moose or a toad just leaping home. A ‘quick stop’ finds you at a Local Artisan’s shop where she is carving an intricate inlay into a cedar chest which absolutely belongs in that corner of your living room or you may find yourself perusing a yard sale where a small yellow teapot with a perfectly, almost artfully chipped handle waits on a crooked shelf. Follow our roads, paved and unpaved, through mountainous landscapes and past working farms. See where it takes you. You’ll pass young calves playing and trotting through the fields as their Mothers look on or a flock of sheep lined up

for their summer haircuts. Stop inside and you may find a farmer ready to share his knowledge or a weaver who has just finished knitting a hat made from alpaca fiber that you’ll be wearing on that first brisk day of autumn. Almost any day of the week, there’s a farmers market somewhere in the Kingdom and it’s a must stop for fresh produce, homemade jams and crafts of all kinds. Come dusk, let the sound of a Concert on the Green be your compass.
With so much to see and do here, you need more than just a day or two to explore our Kingdom, as it’s rightfully named. We’ve got many 4th of July celebrations, some of which thankfully last more than a day

so you can visit more than just one, and we’ve got Good Ole’ Fashioned County Fairs which can’t be missed. There are shows at the Haskell Opera House where the performance is in Canada and you applaud in the US while our youngest performers ‘break a leg’ at the Vermont Children’s Theater. There are Garden Tours, Moonlit Paddles, and Husband & Wife Golf Tournaments. There are the twists and turns and high flying acrobatics of the Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour that will leave you awestruck. There’s Auqafest, the East Burke Strawberry Festival, The August West Festival at Jay Peak, the NEK Music Fest, the Phlox Festival, the North Country Moose Festival and too many other festivals to name. To see what’s happening during your vacation or to plan your vacation around what’s happening, go to our
events calendar and get ready to pack up the car and head to the NEK. Once you’re here, you won’t want to leave (and you’re more than welcome to stay)!
