For a sense of the community you have entered, check out the bulletin board - usually just beside the front entrance - which is likely to be covered with notices: wood burning stove for sale, help wanted, pups or kittens available, music to be performed... Taking a step inside, shelves are packed with a wide assortment, from video rentals to homemade fudge and fresh muffins. Here many of our country stores have to compete with a larger supermarket and convenience stores for customers, and while bigger stores may be able to offer lower prices on groceries, country stores sometimes carry eggs or cream from down the road. The landing, porch or coffee counter offers a place for neighbors to meet, exchanging news about the best fishing or latest winter storm.
