It’s all about balance. Thaddeus Fairbanks invented the platform scale in 1829 and built a fortune on weights and measures in St. Johnsbury. His nephew, Franklin Fairbanks, a lifelong industrialist and amateur naturalist, established an era of elegance here and opened his vast scientific collections to the public at the turn of the 19th century. The Victorian homes along the Main Street of St. Johnsbury recalls top hats and parasols and yet as you drift into the countryside, farms and villages are in harmony with hills and woods and you are able to explore trail systems of all kinds to include the well known trails of Burke Mountain and Kingdom Trails. It’s all about balance.
When you visit Main Streets and Mountain Trails we suggest you take time to explore each of the unique villages in the area. The extensive recreational offerings in the region, including downhill and cross country skiing, mountain biking, paddling, and horseback riding, could cause a visitor to overlook the treasures that can be found in the villages but this area boasts amazing historic, artistic and community offerings to include The Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium, the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, the Catamount Film & Arts Company, year-round farmers markets and festivals, classic country stores and shops, and wonderful events in every season!
