Stretching across rivers and streams, covered bridges recall a time when horse-drawn wagons were the only traffic, and the Northern Mountain region has a number of covered bridges for you to discover. As you find your way from one bridge to the next you will pass through some of the most picturesque working agricultural land in the region set in the wide valleys of the surrounding mountains. There are maps available to help you find the bridges but one of the best ways to find your way around this region is to stop in at one of the many country stores that you can find nestled in almost every village here. Any storekeeper would be glad to point the way. For a sense of the community you have entered, check out the bulletin board as you enter the store – usually just beside the front entrance -which is likely to be covered with notices: wood burning stove for sale, farm help wanted, pups or kittens available, music to be performed…Taking a step inside is taking a step back in time. A visit to this region is sure to take you from country roads and working fields, to quaint villages and mountaintops. Here, activities, recreation, and attractions include cross-country and alpine skiing, sleigh rides, snowmobiling, dog sledding, unique village shops, hiking Vermont’s famous Long Trail, spectacular fall foliage viewing, horseback riding, and wonderful summer paddling.
Take Time to Explore...
When you visit The Northern Mountains we suggest you take time to explore the Mountain Fiber Folk Shop & Studio. Here members of the cooperative from throughout the region showcase unique quality products made from natural fibers obtained from animals lovingly raised on their farms to include Llamas, Alpacas, Colored Angora goats, and a variety of sheep to name but a few. Here you can find a vast supply of materials to include handspun yarns, woven items, needle-felted critters, fiber dolls, and a variety of other locally made gifts and treasures.
