Recreational Tree Climbing is one of the newest and fastest growing outdoor sports today, allowing all ages from 7 to 70 to enjoy the Peter Pan feeling as they hang from the tree tops, or even descend past limbs like an elevator past floors.
The secret to the climbing is the ropes and knots that are used. As a sport, it’s similar to rock climbing, but techniques and methods were adapted from the tree trimming industry. Climbers are trained in the Double Rope Technique (DRT), a system that allows them to let go with hands or feet at any time and still safely maintain their location. The DRT is one of the safest tree climbing methods used. The fun climb is a an individual or family experience and parents feel very secure when they realize that their children never have to unhook and rehook on the ropes. The knots we use for climbing are the same ones we use for descending with safety knots only allowing the climber to descent a few feet at a time. All our ropes and equipment are rated for over 6000 pounds. The sport is proving very safe for climbers and trees alike. The Recreational Tree Climbers Industry reports over 50,000 climbers without a serious accident.
Twin Pines is truly a World Class facility for experiencing Northern Vermont’s finest scenery and forests. Located in Danville, Vermont just a few miles outside of St. Johnsbury near I-91 and I-93, the facility encompasses 35 acres of outstanding forests, close to local hotels, bed and breakfasts and campgrounds.
The hosts with the most—Al and Brenda—define hospitality on their huge spread in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. They provide acres of “God’s country” with awesome views to boot. Their 3 dogs, 2 cats and 2 horses are also a big hit at Twin Pines.
Al is a certified New England Tree Climbing Instructor with years of experience. His love and knowledge of trees and the outdoors is obvious as soon as you meet him. He has a gentle and humorous teaching style, making his students feel right at home. Classes are oriented for various interest levels, from the Fun Climbs to the day and a half Basic course where you learn everything needed to set up and climb on your own. All equipment is provided for a truly educational and fun experience making this an excellent learning/fun weekend away.
Jim Tabor, author of Forever On the Mountain writes, “We had a FANTASTIC time doing the Tree Climbing Experience with Allan and Brenda. As an experienced mountaineer and caver, I was tremendously impressed with their emphasis on safety as well as the superb quality of their instruction, equipment, and facility. We would recommend their courses to anyone who loves to have fun!” —Jim and Liz Tabor, Waitsfield, Vermont

June 6 and 7, 2009: The Tour de Kingdom is a charity ride underwritten by Louis Garneau, Community National Bank and Jay Peak. It offers two days of fully supported century rides for the competitive and recreational cyclist. Each day also offers shorter routes for those who want a less challenging ride. Day One takes riders through the lake region of the Northeast Kingdom. Day Two is a bit more challenging through the western “hill country” of the Kingdom – up and over the flanks of Jay Peak and back. Indoor Recreation of Orleans County hosts this event to support its groundbreaking Healthy Changes Initiative for people suffering from chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease to recruit and retain them into long term programs of regular exercise. It’s a fun filled weekend with a dinner and dance on Saturday evening as well as free use of IROC’s showers, pool, and 94 foot waterslide.

Enjoy a relaxing morning, afternoon or evening walk leading one of our friendly llamas on our variety of trails. Pleasurable trails wind their way over country roads and hayfields, through quiet woods and cedar groves and over brooks & streams.
Walking with llamas is a calming experience that renews your spirit and relaxes your mind. It is the perfect way to wind down after a busy week or to spend quality time with friends and family. Trail walks can be a wonderful way to build and strengthen parent/child relationships.
In addition to our standard trail walks, we can design a special family event or a program of regularly scheduled walks. Llama trail walks also make a great adventure for special events like birthdays, anniversaries or reunions. This is an activity that everyone can enjoy. We carefully match our llamas to each visitor according to comfort level and personality and accompany you on the walk to answer any questions and ensure a positive experience for everyone.
Farm tours are available for schools, daycares, or just the family. Kids and adults will have a day to remember - meeting the animals, helping with feeding chores, maybe even walking the llamas in the obstacle course. The farm has many other critters including chickens, sheep, goats, ducks, horses, cows, angora rabbits, turkeys and pigs!
You can walk with the llamas or visit the farm any time of year. Bring a lunch to enjoy in the picnic area before or after your walk or tour! There is also a play area for the kids. Don't forget to visit the Friends and Neighbors Farm Stand while you're here.
