outdoor activities

The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont is a paradise for people who love the outdoors. If you road-bike, mountain-bike, hike, canoe, kayak, fish, hunt, and birdwatch or ski, snowmobile, snowshoe, ice fish; there's a place for you. Click on VOGA, to access Vermont's ultimate guide to outdoor activities & tours.

Winter enthusiasts will find dependable snow at Jay Peak and Burke Mountain, the region's two downhill resorts.

There are several nordic centers in the Kingdom that machine-groom miles of tracks for classic and skate skiing -- and snowshoers are always welcome. Among the many places to get out and enjoy the snow are the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, Hazen's Notch, Burke X-C, Kingdom Trails, Highland Lodge, Memphremagog Ski Touring Foundation, and Northwoods Stewardship Center.

Catamount Trail is North America's longest ski highway. It starts in Mass. and passes through the Kingdom to the Canadian border. It's open to backcountry skiers and snowshoeing.

Snowmobilers enjoy a connected network covering 3,100 miles on groomed trails. Vermont Snowmobile trail maps are available for $3 at VAST

Before you head out, check the Winter Trail Reports.

Kids and adults will love the adventure of a Vermont Sled Dog Tour! Let a musher and a team of very happy dogs take you on a journey you'll never forget at Montgomery Adventures by Mountain Haven Sled Dogs.

Spring and summer in Vermont brings visitors to the Northeast Kingdom mountains and lakes. For Vermont hiking information visit the Green Mountain Club. Our Lakes Region won't disappoint scullers, anglers, sailors and windsurfers. Some of our northern lakes don't permit motorboats, so please check before launching. There are free fishing maps available from Vt. Fish & Wildlife or contact us for one of our free Northeast Kingdom waterways maps.

If golf is your game, there are several courses in the area including Newport Country Club, Orleans Country Club, Jay Peak Resort, St. Johnsbury Country Club, and Barton Golf Club - all with great offerings and spectacular NEK views.

Summer and Autumn are a perfect time for riding bikes on Kingdom Trails, or walking the backroads. Enjoy a guided bike tour during your Vermont Vacation with North Country Bike Tours. Contact us for one of our free Northeast Kingdom hiking or biking maps.
