Vermont's Northeast Kingdom Geotourism Simple Gifts Campaign

Geo•tour•ism n: Tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well being of its residents.

Vermont's Northeast Kingdom (NEK) has long been cherished by visitors and natives alike for its unspoiled beauty and natural treasures. To preserve the natural environment and to promote sustainable destinations, Vermont's Northeast Kingdom partners with National Geographic to grow and enhance the Geotourism program for the region. As one of the first of its kind in the world, this program allows Vermont's Northeast Kingdom to join a select group of countries and regions working with National Geographic's Center for Sustainable Destinations to promote tourism that enhances and sustains the environment, culture, and heritage of tourism destinations.

In Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, the experiences of our tourists are centered around that which we, as residents, value most about our home. And those who live here communicate very clearly that they love the functioning agricultural lands, the expansive woodlands, the deep clear waters, our diverse cultural heritage, and the small compact villages of the Kingdom. In return, NEK residents and businesses strive to develop and manage our tourism experiences in such a way as to sustain these treasures.

In the NEK, our way of life is changing. A major concern to the Kingdom, as a result of record-low milk prices, is that 24 dairy farms in the state have stopped their operations since December of 2008, according to the Agency of Agriculture. This changes a part of the landscape that we treasure and alters a way of life for many in the Kingdom. We, as a community, believe that the experiences of visitors to our region and those who live here are deeply connected to the land upon which we live, recreate and rely. As such we employ the values of Geotourism to help us protect and preserve Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.

Your Simple Gift can help us continue our efforts to preserve, protect, and sustain our unique landscape and way of life.

Help us to sustain the unique treasures of the Northeast Kingdom. Thank you.
